Jasper’s New Summer Look

Jasper, our long-haired cat, recently developed a lot of matted spots on his back, and they were so bad the only solution was to have him shaved. You might think that’s unusual, but a quick search might surprise you. (Note: do NOT do a Google image search on this topic!) I was shocked at how happy he was when he got home – he’s been soaking up the attention and loves his new ‘do. Apparently it’s better than being petted through a thick coat of hair!

He does, however, look hilarious, so I figured I had to share some pics:

The wrinkly skin and fat belly hanging down only add to the comedic effect :)

In the Dog House

No, this post isn't about my sleeping arrangements for the next few nights - it's about Sam's new home-away-from-home in the backyard. Building this thing turned out to be both more fun and more work than I expected. I knew roughly what I wanted, and I knew exactly where I wanted to put it (underneath the kid's playhouse where there's a framed-in open spot ideal for growing weeds). After doing some research for plans online, none of them fit the dimensions I needed. So it was time to exercise those high school geometry lessons (Pythagorean theorem anyone?) and draw my own:

Construction (and 4 trips to Lowe's) ensued, and now Sam has a nice, insulated dog house to hang out in while no one's home (or when we have used up our puppy patience and send him packing for a little while).

I did forget to mention it ended up weighing a ton, and getting it to that spot required a boogie board, a crowbar, and a rake. I thought I was going to have to cut the rake handle off and leave it under the house Wizard-of-Oz style, but managed to get it free eventually..

What in the Sam Hill?

Meet Sam, Andy and Abby's gift from Santa.  (Remind me to have a chat with Santa later about how it's not a good idea to give people puppies at Christmastime.)  He's a 7 week old chocolate lab, and he is a very cute, very lovable handful.  We will be posting more about Christmas later, but here are some pictures of Sam in the mean time.

I see now where this is headed.

I've known for some time now that we were going to have to get a dog.  We have an almost six year old little boy, after all, and in all fairness, he should have a dog. We've put it off as long as we can, because Nonny and Grandad have a dog, and that's close enough, right?  And we have two cats, and that's pretty good, right?  This plan was working out just fine until we went yesterday to pick up a puppy for my dad.  He's a six week old border collie that we've named Bear and he's just the cutest thing I've ever seen (and this from someone who is admittedly not a dog person.)  So now Andy is spending every spare minute in the backyard playing with this dog.  It's going to be a sad day when he's not around anymore.  I give us three months before we have a dog of our own.

I Love Lucy

Here is a picture of our new cat Lucy.  Jasper was very lonely being an only cat, so we adopted Lucy.  She is still a kitten and very, very playful.  We all enjoy watching her hang from the fish tank by her front paws.
