10/4/2008 Okay, so he turned 6 almost two months ago. Keeping up with this blog is harder than it looks. We had his party at Pump It Up the Saturday before his birthday. There were 23 kids there and we all had a great time. After playing in the bounce houses, we had cake and opened presents. He doesn't look like he's having fun, does he? On his actual birthday, we had Nonny and Grandad and Uncle Brian's family over for dinner and cookies. My favorite present he got? Hermit crabs! (Please ignore the shirt with the wrestler on it. It was a gift.) A week or so later, we went to my parents for his birthday dinner, there. This is Colton. He's camera shy. All in all, it was a great birthday. I can't believe he's 6 already! 9/8/2008 We redid Andy's room this summer. The old room was great for the 2 year old we made it for. Not quite grown up enough for a 6 year old. This is the way it was before. The old walls were bright blue and green, with a construction truck and apple tree that my mom and I worked on for hours. The old bedding matched the truck. Here are the kids painting the room. They worked on it A LOT longer than I thought they would or needed them to (it's a very small room.) They tired soon and went to play. Please excuse the mess. Everything in Andy's room had to come out and that's where it landed. By the time we finished you could hardly walk through the loft. Since the ceiling was painted before, we had to paint it again. NOT FUN. In case you weren't aware. Here is the finished product. Denim blue paint on the top, khaki on the bottom. Red accents. These were a compromise because Andy wanted the whole room red. We kind of went with an airplane theme. I bought these cool metal airplanes from 1975 on Ebay and we framed some posters from pictures we took at the air show. He also has pegs and hooks on the chair rail for art work and hats and backpacks. His new bedding is a nice grown-up plaid and Transformer sheets (another compromise). Steve put up the stars on the ceiling. That's Orion and his belt. I think the room is really cool and hopefully will last a long time. I'm in no hurry to paint again.
8/25/2008I don't know how it's possible, because it seems he was just a baby a few minutes ago, but Andy started Kindergarten today. He only had to go for an hour today and starts full time tomorrow. He's very excited. I'll be sure and take tissues for me.
8/4/2008When we got to my parents to pick up the kids on Saturday, Abby was with my mom, but Andy wasn't. He was with my dad. He had wanted to go on a "bumpy" ride, and my dad, being the ever accommodating grandfather that he is, said okay, let's go. They came back in the truck a few minutes later, and when he got out of the truck, I was seriously taken aback by what I saw. First of all, it looked like he had grown 6 inches in the 6 days that he'd been away. But this was honestly the dirtiest kid I have ever seen. Like Pigpen from Charlie Brown. Now I know he took a bath every night because he went to Vacation Bible School, and there's no way my mother would let him go to church looking like that, so he must have been rolling in the dirt all morning. He didn't have shoes on. I said, "Andy, look at your feet!", and he said, "I know. I stepped in cow poop. But that's okay because I washed it off in the creek." My feminine citified sensibilities were appalled. I'm secretly proud, too, that he's getting to experience some of what growing up in the country is all about. He's since been washed and scrubbed. It's good to have him and his sister home.
2/22/2008Andy has been working very hard at Tae Kwon Do and just got his green belt. This means he is moving up to the next class where they spar and wrestle and he gets a new uniform. 1/29/2008Andy lost one of his front teeth today. He is growing up way too quickly!
9/17/2007And true to his word, he scored another goal for me in Saturday's game! Andy's really maturing this year in his ability to pay attention and focus, which is exactly what we were looking for :) 9/14/2007Andy got his first "real" belt today when he tested for his solid orange belt! In fact, since he learned twice as much as was required for his last belt, he tested early and will be moving on to the next form in the coming weeks.
9/12/2007Tonight, at the start of the second game of his second season playing Soccer, Andy came through with a goal to put his team up 1-0 (they went on to win 8-4 or so). They played their first game on Saturday and scored around 20 points, but although he had one good shot at it, it went wide and he didn't get another chance in that game. Of course, I missed the game sitting here in NY for work, so I asked him if he could do it again for me on Saturday :) Way to go, buddy! 9/8/2007Today was Andy's first t-ball game. We're letting him try both t-ball and soccer this season, which is a lot to do, so that he can pick which one he likes best next season. So far soccer is winning, but that's probably because he's more familiar with it. The teams bat through the order or get 3 outs, whichever comes first - which means batting through the order :) They also alternate between outfield one inning and infield the next, so Andy played right field then catcher.
